Authentic Maharashtrian Toor Dal Recipe: Easy & Delicious!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Toor Dal split pigeon peas, boiled and set aside
  • 1/2 ladle cooking oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida hing
  • 10 to 12 curry leaves
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Kanda Lasun Masala Maharashtrian onion-garlic masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water adjust as needed for thickness
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves for garnish

For the Fresh Spice Paste (Crushed in a mortar and pestle):

  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves keep the tender stems, they add great flavour
  • 1/4 cup dry coconut pieces suka khobra
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 5 to 6 garlic cloves

Instructions
 

  • Step 1: Boil the Dal. Wash the Toor Dal thoroughly and pressure cook it on medium heat for 3 to 4 whistles until soft. Do not mash it completely if you enjoy a little texture in your Authentic Maharashtrian Toor Dal Recipe.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Fresh Paste. In a mortar and pestle, add the fresh coriander with stems, dry coconut, green chilli, ginger, and garlic. Crush them into a coarse paste. This fresh hand-pounded paste is the secret to a tasty dal!
  • Step 3: Start the Tempering. Heat 1/2 ladle of oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds and let them pop. Then, add the cumin seeds, asafoetida (hing), and curry leaves.
  • Step 4: Sauté the Onion. Add the finely chopped onion to the pan. Sauté it nicely until it turns golden brown.
  • Step 5: Cook the Paste and Tomato. Add your freshly crushed coconut-garlic paste to the pan and cook for 1 minute. Next, add the chopped tomato and salt. Cook for another minute until the tomato softens.
  • Step 6: Add Dry Spices. Turn your stove heat to low so the spices do not burn. Add the turmeric powder and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Kanda Lasun Masala. Mix everything well.
  • Step 7: Mix the Dal and Simmer. Pour your boiled Toor Dal into the pan. Stir gently. Add warm water to adjust the thickness to your liking. Bring the dal to a nice boil and let it simmer for 5 minutes so all the flavours blend perfectly.
  • Step 8: Garnish and Serve. Turn off the heat and garnish your beautiful Authentic Maharashtrian Toor Dal Recipe with freshly chopped coriander. Serve hot!
